China & Google

I saw a great cartoon this morning about China & Google. It is political satire, but it’s so true. In case you haven’t heard, the search engine giant is putting pressure on China to stop censoring search results.

I’ve said before that truth is not something we should fear … that is, unless you are a dictator of a Communist country. When I was in China in 1997, some of my students shared confidentially (b/c they weren’t supposed to talk about it, they said) that many of their parents – and especially grandparents – did not believe that the Tiananmen Square massacre in 1989 really happened. The official news outlets denied it, and the government-run news is gospel; therefore, it didn’t happen.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

  1. I heard a story today about how Google is naturally taking a business hit because of this decision. For example, the android phones sold in China won’t have Google on them. Well, duh. I’m hoping that Google expected this & they’re taking the stand anyway.

  2. I heard a story on NPR about Google taking a business hit from this decision. duh. People were acting like Google would be surprised and bummed that, for example, the android phones sold in China wouldn’t have Google installed. I would hope that they expected all this and that they’re taking a stand based upon principle.

(Thank you, Google, I had to look up which principle I wanted!)
